Bio
I'm Amir, a spirited, enthusiastic young sighthound who can't wait to explore the world. Having travelled more than once, I'm proud to tell you that changes of setting do not destabilise me one bit. I adapt well and know how to blend in.
Connecting with humans is my utmost priority. When the humans of SARA visit me I soak up every touch and word. They are impressed at how fast I grasp commands and how eagerly I follow. I love to cuddle and get very sad when my visitors leave. I've been in the company of peers my whole life and am very sociable. I love to play chase and I respect my seniors. I'm ok with puppies and small breeds I've encountered at the shelter. If I'm to be the only dog of your household, you'll have to take me to off-lead areas and group walks very often, preferably with other sighthounds like myself.
You must know that we are bred for hunting hare and other wildlife in Morocco. You cannot expect me to ignore my natural prey drive or to know instinctively what not to hunt. You'll have to teach me the rules of your world and keep me safe. Where I am now, there are lots of cats and I have to admit that they intrigue me. I cannot decide whether to chase them around, or to ignore them and empty their food trays instead, because I'm also a foodie. I may not be suitable for a household with cats, but if you're committed to socialising me with your cat you can perhaps teach me to be gentle. As you can imagine, I like to run and need daily exercise. Having a garden would be a bonus, but you'd still have to take me outdoors and offer me enriching activities.
There's a bit of a debate over whether I'm a Sloughi or a Saluki, or a mix of both. Either way, everyone agrees that I'm very handsome. I'm well built and lean, weigh around 23kg and measure about 70cm at shoulder.
Background
Amir was entrusted to us along with two Sloughi females at the start of 2024, after Moroccan authorities confiscated them in the Souss-Massa region. Amir was only around 7 months old when he arrived at SARA and still very much a puppy. He grew into adulthood at our Shems shelter, in a large enclosure with 9 other sighthounds. But his pack shrunk as the dogs got adopted one after the other, and now only Amir and Zafir remain. Every departure has been a little heartbreak for Amir and it's urgent that he finds a family of his own.
